Curriculum Development Intern
Mission
To increase community engagement through volunteerism and enhance the impact of
regional service partners.
History
In August 1992, six Pittsburgh friends joined together to launch Pittsburgh
Cares in an effort to offer local volunteer opportunities to individuals unable
to make long-term commitments to local nonprofit organizations. Pittsburgh Cares
is affiliated with the Hands On Network, a nonprofit organization that unites
more than a half a million volunteers from 64 national and international
affiliates to be the change that they wish to see in their communities. The
global network of affiliates coordinates over 50,000 volunteer projects each
year.
Pittsburgh Cares increases public awareness of social issues, offers a flexible
volunteer matching program, and works to build the capacity and impact of
regional nonprofit organizations. Each month, there are between 50-70 service
projects coordinated through the Pittsburgh Cares office that are open to the
general public. There are an additional 15-20 customized projects coordinated
monthly for regional businesses, educational institutions, faith-based groups
and civic organizations. Volunteers simply register online or over the phone and
show up at the project; Pittsburgh Cares coordinates the rest! With a broad menu
of activities, convenient scheduling, and flexible commitment levels, Pittsburgh
Cares makes it easy for almost anyone to become involved in volunteering in the
Greater Pittsburgh region.
